RATING SYSTEM FOR EVALUATION OF TELEVISION PROGRAMME UNHELPFUL

Speaking at the valedictory function for twenty-fourth batch of electronic media trainees of Asian Academy of Film & Television, the renowned social scientist, communication researcher and currently director, Centre for Media Research, Dr. N. Bhaskara Rao said that the satellite television boom has created unprecedented demand for good programmes. He, however, felt that there is a dearth of trained and competent film & television professionals in the country. He said that the ‘rating – system’ for evaluating television programme is unsuitable as it has a crippling effect on the talent. Such a system tends to limit the potential of a creative person. He stressed the need for thoroughly researching the subject before converting it into a film or a television show. Dr. Bhaskara Rao mentioned that as of now about 61 % of adult Indians watch television. Earlier speaking on the occasion, Dr. Nafees Siddiqui, Principal of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi, said that dedication, hardwork and above all maintaining disciple are key to successful learning of any subject. He wished and hoped that the training in this world renowned institution will keep pace with the changing demand on the media professionals. Bidding farewell to about sixty students which included nationals of Botswana and Yemen, some other distinguished speakers and Director of AAFT, Prof. Sandeep Marwah wished good luck of the would be film and television professionals. The twenty fifth session of the academy will commence from 27 September 1999.
